SMI Technology Allows Customers to See Low-Level Flows Without the Need for Contrast Agents

TUSTIN, Calif., Dec. 10, 2014 – As Rex Healthcare looked to expand capabilities and further its position as a leader in vascular imaging, it acquired an Aplio™ 500 ultrasound system with Superb Micro-Vascular Imaging (SMI) from Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. Clinicians are now able to perform high-end, non-invasive vascular exams – looking at carotid arteries, visceral and renal organs – improving clinician confidence.

“Since our team shifted to using SMI, we are experiencing image quality that is night and day from other technologies,” said Pat Washko, Technical director, Rex Hospital, UNC Healthcare Vascular Center. “Rex Healthcare is now able to perform more comprehensive exams with the two different color modes, especially for identifying incidental findings to differentiate between solid and cystic masses. It is the right technology for our expanding vascular capabilities.”

In the past, physicians wanting to see low-velocity micro-vascular blood flow would have to use contrast agents or more invasive modalities. But with SMI, clinicians can dramatically improve the patient’s overall experience by making exams safer and faster.

“Toshiba understands what it takes to push ultrasound to the next level,” said Tomohiro Hasegawa, director, Ultrasound Business Unit, Toshiba. “With the development of SMI, clinicians can use ultrasound to see smaller vessels in and around areas like tumors and lymph nodes, giving way to faster, non-invasive disease diagnosis for improved care.”
